Postpartum Shapewear: Why Wear It and How to Choose

Abdominal and back support after pregnancy: how the models differ, how to find your size, and why the timing should be agreed with your doctor.

Postpartum recovery: support, comfort and confidence

The body needs time to recover after pregnancy. The abdomen does not immediately return to its previous shape, particularly after a caesarean birth or subsequent pregnancies. Skin and muscles have been stretched for months; swelling, abdominal wall weakness and diastasis recti may persist.

Postpartum shapewear can offer additional support and help you feel more comfortable in everyday clothing. It shapes the silhouette while worn, but does not replace the body’s recovery, prescribed treatment or rehabilitation.

Why wear postpartum shapewear?

A correctly fitted garment may:

  • provide external support to the abdomen and back;
  • make the abdomen look more defined;
  • shape the waist while worn;
  • create an additional feeling of support;
  • help you feel more comfortable in everyday clothing.
Consult your treating doctor before using a garment after childbirth. Shapewear is not a treatment for diastasis recti, hernias or pelvic organ prolapse, and does not guarantee pain relief or faster recovery.

Why does the correction level matter?

Regular shapewear primarily smooths the silhouette. Extra-strong correction produces more pronounced shaping by fitting the abdomen, waist and back more firmly. The appropriate postpartum compression level depends not just on your preferred silhouette, but also on your condition and your doctor’s advice.

Maximum shaping does not mean choosing a smaller size. Use your current measurements and the specific brand’s size chart. Extra-strong correction comes from the garment’s construction, not from buying a deliberately tight size.

Colombian Siluet garments: Violet, Sabina and Anna Latex for silhouette shaping

Siluet Sabina — fuller-coverage postpartum shaping

Sabina is an extra-strong correction model designed to support and shape several areas at once: abdomen, waist, back and thighs. Its dense fabric and latex layer provide a firm fit and pronounced silhouette shaping.

Consider this model when you want to shape not only the abdomen but also the thighs. If swelling is a concern, discuss it with your doctor: a garment does not replace investigating the cause or receiving medical care.

Siluet Anna Latex — focus on the abdomen and waist

Anna Latex offers extra-strong correction of the abdomen, waist and back. Its latex layer enhances shaping of the central body: while worn, the abdomen looks flatter and the waistline more defined.

It is an option for those who want to focus on the abdomen and waist, provided this compression level has been agreed with their doctor. Discuss the garment’s composition separately if you have latex sensitivity or an allergy.

When can you wear shapewear after childbirth?

The timing may differ after vaginal and caesarean births. Agree the starting date, compression level and duration of wear with your treating doctor, especially after surgery. There is no universal day that suits everyone: the incision’s condition, how you feel and your individual recovery all matter.

Do not start strong compression on your own. If a garment causes pain, numbness, breathing difficulty or pressure on the incision, stop wearing it and seek medical advice.

How do you choose your postpartum size?

Use your current measurements, not your pre-pregnancy size. Measure your waist, abdomen and hips and compare them with Siluet’s chart. If your measurements fall into different rows, ask a consultant for help and take your doctor’s recommendations into account.

Size chart

Measure your waist at its narrowest point, abdomen at its fullest point, and hips at the widest part of the buttocks.

SizeWaist (cm)Abdomen (cm)Hips (cm)
XS60–65up to 75up to 96
S66–73up to 82up to 99
M74–80up to 90up to 103
L81–87up to 100up to 108
XL88–95up to 110up to 114
2XL96–102up to 117up to 120
3XL103–108up to 124up to 127
If you are between sizes, ask a consultant to confirm the fit. After childbirth or surgery, follow your treating doctor’s advice.

Which model should you choose?

  • Sabina — abdomen, waist, back and thighs: fuller coverage for overall shaping.
  • Anna Latex — focus on the abdomen, waist and back: pronounced correction of the central body.

Both Siluet models are made in Colombia and offer extra-strong correction. Choose according to the areas you want supported, your current measurements and your doctor’s advice — not the idea that tighter is always better.
